The Montessori Schools Foundation is looking to recruit Trustees to its Board.
After a period of dormancy, the Foundation is seeking to recruit Trustees who will actively guide Brighton and Hove Montessori School into a period of growth, working to develop and implement its business and marketing strategy, actively fundraise to create scholarships for children based on need, and to work alongside a group of parents in campaigning local and national government for a local Montessori State School.
If you are a lawyer, a business strategist (charitable sector, ideally), a marketing and / or PR expert, a fundraising dynamo, an education expert, a children’s rights advocate or have worked for government at local or national level, and you want a new challenge and a desire to support the next generation, please register you interest to Kristin Magnuson at bhmontessoriparents at googlemail dot com by Monday, 5 April.
Time commitment will be a Board Monthly meeting as well as any sub-committee meetings you may elect to participate.
We are a parent-led group who would like a Montessori state school for children aged 3-11 years in Brighton & Hove.
Until recently, a Montessori education has been restricted to the few children of parents able to afford fees of around £2,000 per term but in the past few years, state Montessori infant schools have opened in the UK. We want to open the first state funded Montessori School in Brighton & Hove and increase the diversity and choice available to families in our city.
A study published in the journal Science suggests that children who attend Montessori schools may have an edge over other children in terms of both academic and social development. Psychologists have found that across a range of abilities, children at Montessori schools out-performed those given a traditional education. Montessori children displayed a greater sense of "justice and fairness", interacted in an "emotionally positive" way, and were less likely to engage in "rough play" during break times.
The Montessori environment is a highly social one in which the children are continually interacting with and caring for each other. They are proud of their environment because they are directly involved with caring and contributing to it. Each child develops self-confidence, enthusiasm and responsibility for themselves, together with a respect and understanding of members of their community and the wider world.
We want the children of Brighton & Hove to be allowed to learn to think for themselves, not be prescribed to ‘from above’; to learn self-direction, not how to pass tests; to learn to assume the responsibilities that come with freedom
