The Montessori approach is about the development of the human being from 0 to maturity. Underlying principles include the understanding of developmental processes that characterise all people, whilst at the same time recognising that every person is unique.
Montessori education is based on the needs of the growing person rather than being driven by adult imposed targets. Independent learning comes from guiding each child to make responsible choices about appropriate activities that help them learn new skills at a rate which is comfortable for them. This ensures depth of understanding and constant stimulation without the risk of failure.
Director (teacher) led "lessons" usually take no more than a few minutes and are 1:1 or in a small group. The child then continues their work independently; in a Montessori classroom it may be that all children are doing different work with the director guiding as and when needed.
Montessori educational activities challenge children in ways that they can manage for themselves. Children set materials out for their own use and clear them away afterwards ready for other children. A child may take as long as they need to complete a task successfully; they are not constrained by set lesson times.
Children also love offering and requesting help from other children of different ages. In a Montessori classroom this happens all the time and leads to a genuine feeling of community wellbeing.
Montessori education is not just about the learning materials. Montessori is an holistic attitude to personal development which supports independent thought and action. Montessori promotes respect for every individual, valuing their unique contribution to society in the belief that this leads to a peaceful and vibrant world.
